Ethan Hawke Signs on for ‘Total Recall’ Remake

Wow goes to show how much I’ve been following some news as I had no idea they were even doing a remake of the Arnie classic. Anyway Ethan Hawke is to join Colin Farrell who is starring in this remake.
The new story ditches the Martian storyline and instead involves nation states Euromerica and New Shanghai, with Douglas Quaid (Farrell) a factory worker in the latter who begins to believe he is a spy, although he doesn’t know for which side.
On the one hand I like the idea that this is not a complete remake but on the other hand it feels weird naming it after such a classic film and not having the Mars storyline. It feels like the makers are trying to distance themselves from the more overtly sci-fi elements of the original film, which is a shame. With today’s level of effects, a good script and in the hands of a great director we could have got a stunning vision of Mars. The new plot (which is sounds similar to the old one) sounds ok but feels more Total Bourne than Total Recall.
Hopefully as more news comes out about the film we can get a better idea of what to expect.
