Star Trek Online, the MMORPG that expands the Trek universe, will be transitioning from its monthly subscription-based plan to a free-to-play model.
Cryptic Studios, who also allow you to live out your superhero fantasies in the MMO Champions Online, will be turning Star Trek Online into a free game by the end of this year. It wasn’t too long ago that Cryptic also announced that Champions Online would become F2P. It’s been an interesting year for developer Cryptic; they have been bought out by developer Perfect World International this year as well.
F2P games have become an ever-increasing trend for massively multiplayer games, and giving their games away for basically nothing has proven to be profitable. This stinks for the old subscribers of STO, though; some players have gone as far a to signed up for Star Trek Online‘s pricey lifetime subscription, which was a gamble that your investment would actually save you money. Now everyone will be saving money, but this time it’ll be from day one.
I you have never seen nor heard of STO before, here is video of some steamy starship on starship action
