Bristol Comic Expo 2012 Countdown – Improper Books Launches
Posted by geeksyndicate on May 2, 2012
This wasn’t my intended post for today’s countdown but seeing as the news landed in my inbox this morning and it is relevant to the con I thought I would run with it. The news regards a new comic imprint which has just launched and will be showing off limited previews of their comics BUTTERFLY GATE: BEGINNINGS and PORCELAIN: A GOTHIC FAIRY TALE at the expo. I took a tour around their website and the initial art on display for these two titles looks fantastic and is well worth taking a detour to have a look. The art has an european vibe to it and reminds me of the sort of titles I would pick up from the Cinebook team.
The idea behind Butterfly Gate:Beginnings feels like a Sci-Fi version of The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, although I could be way off. The premise between Porcelain looks equally cool so I’ll be keeping an eye out for more as news as time goes on.
The main idea behind Improper Books is that it’s title will be centered around fairy tales, the gothic or the macabre. The team also are planning to focus on the digital side of things as well so it will be interesting to see where Improper Books are this time next year.

IMPROPER BOOKS LAUNCHES AND HEADS FOR BRISTOL EXPO
Improper Books is a small collective of comic creators formed by Benjamin Read (Writer), Laura Trinder (Artist) and Chris Wildgoose (Artist).
After first collaborating together on the set of UK independent feature WARHOUSE, the trio discovered a mutual love for comics, illustrated books, and the darker side of fairy tales and set about making their own.
From that, the idea of Improper Books came about; a collective of writers, artists and designers with the know-how to make comics, books and apps, all of which have a touch of the fairy tale, the Gothic or the macabre, and focused on a creator-owned model that is fair to all involved.
Since then, we’ve grown to include other creatives – artists, colourists, designers, editors, letterers and writers – and expand the projects we’re planning and developing. The group now includes the talents of Jim Campbell (Letterer), Alice Duke (Artist), Matt Gibbs (Writer/Editor), Rose Hewlett (Production Director), Mark Kendrick (Digital Media Designer), André May (Colourist), and Bevis Musson (Artist).
In a few weeks, Improper Books will be attending our first convention, the Bristol Comic Expo on May 12-13th, 2012, where we’ll have a limited run of B&W previews of our first comics, BUTTERFLY GATE: BEGINNINGS and PORCELAIN: A GOTHIC FAIRY TALE, available, both of which are written and illustrated by Benjamin Read and Chris Wildgoose.
Over the next few months, we’ll be announcing more of the projects planned for this year and next. We’ve got a variety of things in the works, from comics and books, both print and digital, to iPad and Kindle apps, and for all ages too.
