Sony Releases Synopsis of Next M. Night Shyamalan Film ‘After Earth’

M. Night Shyamalan’s tenth film as writer and director is due for release in June 2013, but with the geekfest that is San Diego Comic Con due to start next week, Sony are trying to generate some buzz around the project with an early release of the film synopsis.
Yesterday, aintitcool.com revealed that the film will star Will Smith alongside his real son Jaden Smith who will portray his fictional son. ’After Earth’ is set one thousand years into the future. Cataclysmic events have forced humanity to escape from earth to a planet called Nova Prime.
” Legendary General Cypher Raige (Will Smith) returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai (Jaden Smith). When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai’s craft, they crash-land on a now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon. His whole life, Kitai has wanted nothing more than to be a soldier like his father. Today, he gets his chance. “
Dysptopian Sci-Fi is a definite change of style for M. Night, who badly needs to produce a big box office and crowd pleasing film. Although it made back more than twice its budget, his last film as writer and director was the ”The Last Airbender”. Airbender was widely critically panned and vocally disliked by fans of the original animated series.
Sony have confirmed that there will be a panel presentation around the film at this year Comic Con, but did not confirm who would be on the panel. Pre-hyping films at Comic Con does not guarantee commercial success – as ‘Green Lantern’ illustrated – but perhaps this will generate interest in M. nights new project, a project so hush-hush that it doesn’t even yet have an IMDB entry!
