Barbarella Coming to a TV Screen Near You

Posted by Mirjana on January 31, 2013

barbarellaIf you’re a fan of the 1968 flick Barbarella or the graphic novel it was based on, then you’ll be glad to hear that Gaumont International Television is working on a project that will bring the iconic character back to life in a new television series.

Based on French graphic novels created by Jean-Claude Forest, Barbarella first came to screens in 1968 and starred Jane Fonda as the title character. It didn’t do well in theaters, but has since earned a pretty avid cult following.

Gaumont International has decided to bring the character back to life; they are teaming with producer Martha De Laurentiis and Drive director Nicolas Refn to create a television series based on the character. De Laurentiis and Refn will co-produce, and Refn will direct the series. Interestingly, De Laurentiis and her late husband acquired the Barbarella film rights in 2007 with the intention of creating a feature film, but that project never came to fruition.

Additionally, Skyfall writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade have been tapped to write the series, so it’s shaping up to be an impressive roster of talent. It helps that this isn’t Gaumont’s first foray into putting well-known characters on television – they were the driving force behind the upcoming Hannibal series on NBC, which will star Hugh Dancy and Mads Mikkelsen.
