Nine Worlds Geekfest 2015: Schedule

Nine Worlds Geekfest 2015: Schedule

15 Jul, 2015

With not very long to go now, this years Nine Worlds schedule is now available on-line. Check it out HERE Pyjama Drama is back with its wonderful selection of items to keep the young geeks amused, and I am very happy to say that they are catering for the younger children this year, with sessions for 6-24 month olds – I know our little one will definitely be checking these out. A few tracks that have stood out to us are:   * THURSDAY: 6:15pm – Cosplayers Assemble! – Last-minute costume rescue: help, support and chat to finish your cosplay. A helpful one for all you cos players who still have a few last-minute tweaks to do. 7:00pm – Cheese & Cheese What better way to end your first day than to eat some cheese and hear/read some of your most cheesiest reads. Bring your worst – and remember we are all geeks together. * FRIDAY: 5:00pm – Star Trek Pictionary Pictionary and Star Trek what better combination could there possibly be? 6:00pm – The Whedon Singalong Make sure you get there early for this, as it is always really popular. 8:00pm – Knightmare Live Straight from the Edinburgh Fringe, do what you always wanted to do when you were a child and try to defeat the dungeon. * SATURDAY 10:00am – Build A Mech Race against the clock to create a giant robot suit from tinfoil, cardboard and gaffer tape. 10:00am & 3:15pm – Water Dancing with Syrio Forel (TICKETED) After hugely successful sell out sessions last year (darkphoenix did this and it was amazing) Miltos Yerolemou returns to teach Arya wannabes how to survive in Kings Landing. 1:30pm – Self Defence 101: S.H.I.E.L.D field training for female agents (TICKETED) This session will be taught by experienced martial art experts (Not Agent May – Sorry folks!!) in order to teach you how to defend yourself against those naughty Hydra agents. 8:30pm – Bifröst – Cabaret and Disco What Nine Worlds convention would be complete without the fabulous Bifrost Queer Cabaret. Always a hit, and a great way to let your hair down with your fellow geeks. * SUNDAY 10:00am – Can’t Stop the Signal – Taking your podcast to the next level Join the hosts of a number of successful podcasts discussing how best...

Nine Worlds Geekfest News: This years new tracks

Nine Worlds Geekfest News: This years new tracks

6 Jul, 2015

Nine Worlds Geekfest may only been in its 3rd year this year, but they make sure that they continue to grow and cover more and more things for all us geeks each year. Last year the new tracks included: Food Geekery, Whedon, Podcasting, Future Tech, and Race and Culture. And this year is no different with the introduction of: Anime, Apocalypse, History, Religion, Star Trek, Supernatural and Tolkien. Here is some information on each – both of us will be checking out the Star Trek tracks and darkphoenix with definitely be checking out the Supernatural track. The Anime Track will provide a brief introduction to what has rapidly become a stalwart of Geek Culture. It will be discussing some key moments in Anime and Manga, and examining the relationship the West has with an art form that encompasses everything from giant robots and magical mermaids to historical intrigue and the horrors of war. It will also be looking at costumes, Kaiju and everything that has grown out of oriental geekery. The Apocalypse track will be covering all aspects of the end of the world and what comes afterwards. Including everything from zombies, to meteors, to a future where antibiotics have ceased to work, it will be looking at how apocalypses are written, how society will be rebuilt after there is one, and whether the guests at Nine Worlds will have what it takes to survive after everyone else on the planet has been eaten or smashed by robots. The History Track understands that the study of the past is, of course, a very important subject that is taken seriously. But it is also possible to have a lot of fun as a historian, and there’s lots of potential for geeky and fannish behaviour. This track will introduce history to geeks, and emphasise the geeky aspects. At the same time, historians will be given a chance to explore their own geekiness, learn about how to handle sources, and see historians enthuse about their subject. The Religion & Faith Track seeks to explore how religion and faith interact with geekdom, and serves to help, question, inspire, and form a major part of many of the fandoms. Be these taken from Western, Eastern, or ancient religions, they...

Nine Worlds Geekfest 2015 Countdown

Nine Worlds Geekfest 2015 Countdown

23 Jun, 2015

With less than 50 days to go until Nineworlds Geekfest 2015 we thought we’d provide an update on whats happening at this years event. Yet again Nineworlds have built on the last 2 years conventions and have another hugely daunting but impressive array of tracks again. These range from A Song of Ice and Fire (ASOIAF) to Worlds of Whedon with a whole lot in-between, in fact there are a total of 28 different tracks (check out the full list HERE). Pretty much whatever your into there is a track that has you covered, the only problem you’ll have is working out how to split yourself into 4 so you can go to everything you will want to. One of the stand out events is the return of Miltos Yerolemou (Syrio Forel in Game of Thrones) and his fabulous Water Dancing lessons which are back by popular demand. I can highly recommend this after attending last year – Get in quick though if your interested as this will certainly sell out quickly. As I write this article it has just been announced that Friday nights entertainment will be Knightmare Live! on stage. This should be a great evening, this show has had two critically acclaimed Edinburgh-Fringe runs and then went on a national tour before culminating in its West End debut. Now following their successful run at the Underbelly festival, they’re bringing a special Friday Night ‘Expansion Pack’ Show to Nine Worlds. If you haven’t attended Geekfest before check out what we thought about Geekfest 2014 in our review here. Geek Syndicate will be attending Nineworlds again this year and yet again we can’t wait….7th August can’t come quick enough. Keep tuned for more news as we get it… Source: Nineworlds GS Blogger: Darkphoenix1701 &...
