Batgirl Rises Fan File Teaser Trailer Released

29 Aug, 2014

A young determined librarian desperately seeks the truth after her brothers disappearance with a mysterious woman The same team who bought the world the Girl of Steel fan film releases a teaser trailer for their second installment, Batgirl Rises. The trailer release on vimeo this week is shows the birth of my favourite character of all time, Barbara Gordon. Starring Lindsay Heath as the title role, Constance Brenneman as Harleen Quinzel and Devon Coull as James Gordon Jr. The entire fan made film will be released on the 3rd November. While the trailer seems to have some great fight scenes in it, the action is cut very fast and it’s very difficult to tell how this film will pan out in terms of story. The origin story for Barbara is fairly stable, staying largely the same since her conception in 1967 with her creating her costume for a costume ball. However this story seems a lot darker and more violent from the glimpses seen in the trailer. So far I’m not convinced by the look of the film or the casting but as no characters talk in the trailer it’s really hard for me to generate a strong opinion either way. It all feels a bit too gritty bearing in mind that Barbara Gordon is a intelligent librarian and the daughter of the police commissioner. Even so I will be following their Facebook page for more videos. Source: Batgirl Rises...

Her Universe Expands its Doctor Who Universe

Her Universe Expands its Doctor Who Universe

22 Aug, 2014

Just in time for the start of season 8 of Doctor Who, Her Universe has released some amazing new clothes for female Whovians across the world. The vision of Ashley Eckstein, the voice of Ahsoka Tano on Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Her Universe provides fun, well designed sci-fi and fantasy clothes for girls and women. I’ve been an avid fan of Her Universe since it launched and recently it has gone from strength to strength adding more franchises, starting with Star Wars then branching out into Marvel, Star Trek and Doctor Who. One of their growing lines is their Doctor Who line and here is a look at some of their latest designs for the new series:   First up is what I’ve been waiting for,  a Doctor Who maternity t-shirt.  With the slogan, future time lord across the bump this is perfect for anyone you know who is expecting (especially when they are due to drop during season 8, like yours truly)     Next has to be this Van Gogh inspired dress.  The Van Gogh episode was  one of my favourite and no matter how many times I’ve seen the image of the Tardis I’ve always wanted it on a T-shirt or dress, now my prayers have been answered I like the cut of this dress, it’s not too tight about the legs and not too low cut making it perfect for everyday wear.     This raglan shirt is a lovely nod to the year it all started 1963. I really love the cut of this t-shirt as like most of the Her Universe shirts, though they are fitted they are not skin tight, and more importantly they are long which is fantastic.       Lastly is the the Goodbye Raggedy Man t-shirt.  This is what Her Universe does best, finding or creating wonderful images that have a geeky link and putting them on well cut t-shirts.  I previously loved the art deco star wars t-shirts and this is firmly on my wish list too.  I love the summery colours and the fact it’s not too overtly Doctor Who but skill would help me keep my geek-cred.       There are loads of other amazing pieces on...

Image Comics Releases New All-Ages Adventure Comic, Penny Dora

Image Comics Releases New All-Ages Adventure Comic, Penny Dora

19 Aug, 2014

One day, a young girl named Penny Dora discovers a mysterious box on her front doorstep. It is a magic box with the power to grant wishes…but what she’s about to unwrap is the darker and creepier meaning behind the old adage, “be careful what you wish for.” Image Comics new title  Penny Dora & the Wishing Box is an all-ages fantasy adventure book which takes the Pandora story to a new, slightly friendlier place.  The first few pages are beautiful with clean art and an intriguing start the story. I like the way the story seems to be told in the third person, which could lead to the comic being great for parents to read to their children.  This looks to be a promising book which could help add to all-ages market. When “Part Time Punks” DJ and writer Michael Stock’s daughter wrote a story for her school paper when she was 8 little did she know her dad would turn it into a new fantasy adventure series with artist Sina Grace (BURN THE ORPHANAGE, LI’L DEPRESSED BOY). This story became Penny Dora & The Wishing Box, a new fantasy adventure series will begin in November from Image Comics with a special 28-page first issue. “The first issue is basically an expansion of her original story.” said Stock  “Since then the story has grown through talks we had in the car on the way to school in the mornings via a playful papa/daughter back and forth game of ‘what if.’ The cat in the book, Iggy, is based on our cat (also named Iggy, and also a great lover of ham).” Grace added: “The minute I read Michael’s scripts for the series, I was absolutely enchanted by Penny Dora and her world. It’s been a dream to breathe life into the adventures of fantastic and charming characters. I can’t wait for the world to see!” Penny Dora & The Wishing Box is a retelling of the Pandora myth which is designed to be a perfect all-ages fantasy for fans of Neil Gaiman’s Coraline.  Eisner Award winning cartoonist Hope Larson (A Wrinkle In Time, Mercury) provides the alternate cover for the 1st issue and lettering for the series. Dean Trippe and Something Terrible receives Kickstarter Backing

Dean Trippe and Something Terrible receives Kickstarter Backing

19 Jan, 2014

Something Terrible is a beautifully and carefully written web comic dealing with Dean Trippe’s own childhood trauma, now it has received over  450% backing for it to come to print. I read Something Terrible online after a friend showed it to me.  I instantly related to Dean Trippe, who discovered in Batman a way to make it through what he went through and find safety in a world where the bad guys do get caught, as I have a very similar relationship to Barbara Gordon. I needed to buy the full story read it all and for only $0.99, it was worth it. The artwork gives a Wizard of Oz feel with blue and white being used throughout until the last panel when Dean is shown that there is a place he will be safe. An image which has done the rounds over recent months. Now Dean is taking the book to print with the help of nearly 1,000 fans on Kickstarter. With two weeks left this book is guaranteed to get printed with the $6,400 goal being completely smashed. I can’t wait to get my hands on this book because despite the story being aimed at adults I know there are a lot of teenagers who I know would benefit from reading this book and seeing that they are not alone. I also can’t wait to get my own print of the You’ll be safe here panel which is going to go near my desk in my classroom as it is a wonderful piece of art. With amazing reviews from Greg Pak, Joe Glass, Chris Burnham and many, many more I am so happy that internet has taken this story to heart and is funding this wonderful book. This project ends on the 2nd February and will be funded so it is a safe bet if you want to invest in a fantastic book that helps explain the true power of superheroes and comics. Inside HBO’s Game of Thrones: Seasons 3 & 4 is Announced

19 Jan, 2014

With Game of Thrones season 3 due out next month and trailers going up for season 4 excitement for this amazing show continues to rise and now Gollancz have announced volume two of their bestselling Inside HBO’s Game of Thrones, this time focusing on season 3 and 4. This book promises to be a visually stunning as the first, taking fans back behind the scenes of this amazing series. At over 192 full colour pages, Inside HBO’s Game of Thrones: Seasons 3 & 4 will give fans an insight to the creation of the costumes and visual effects, which have helped Game of Thrones become so successful.   It will also provide some in-depth examinations of key scenes and insight about the plot and production from the show’s cast and crew. Written by Cat Taylor who has written the “Making of Game of Thrones” production diary blog since 2010 and featuring contributions from David Benioff, D.B Weiss and the author himself George R. R. Martin this book has some heavy-weight names to make it more than just a book with lots of pretty pictures. However it is still early days as book won’t be available until autumn 2014 but based on the quality of the first volume I think this is one book all Game of Throne fans can expect to put on their Christmas list.
