Kitchies Awards: ‘The Shortlist Is Up’ or ‘Bookstack Is Laughing At Me’

I’ve finally admitted it: there’s no way I’m going to be able to read all of the books out there.  I’m not even going to be able to read all the books in my favourite genres.  There are several ways I could deal with this crushing turn of events:

1. I could redouble my efforts: casting off comic books, Netflix, Twitter and podcasting in order to cram more words in my eyes

2. I could use audio-books to pour stories down my ear canals whilst suffering horribly from insomnia or…

3. I can go for quality instead of quantity, getting recommendations from friends and reviewers whose opinions I’ve come to trust.

Given my general preference for active reading over passive listening (combined with a marriage-straining Twitter addiction) I’m plumping for Option 3.  It’s here that folks like Anne and Jared from Pornokitsch can really help out.  They started giving out awards to authors and artists back in 2009 and have fast become one of the more respected ceremonies for their simple honesty and dedication to:

reward[ing] the year’s most progressive, intelligent and entertaining works that contain elements of the speculative or fantastic.

Everybody wants to win awards, but they are so much more valuable when politics are dumped in favour of a genuine recognition of talent.

Pop on over to SFX for the Shortlist, then start getting hold of the books.

I’m already on it.
