The Dark Judges Return in “Dark Dominion”

One of the things I have enjoyed about 2000AD over the last couple of years has been the embrace of older characters like Strontium Dog and Slaine, meaning we get to see new stories featuring these beloved characters. That trend continues as in 2017 as writer John Wagner (Judge Dredd, A History of Violence) and horror artist extraordinaire Nick Percival (Clive Barker’s Hellraiser) bring back the infamous Dark Judges.  The story will be a follow up to 2015’s chilling Dark Justice, which was an awesome Alien-style race-against-time: the undead alien superfiends Judges Death, Fear, Fire, and Mortis ran amok on an ark ship full of colonists as their eternal foes Judge Dredd and Judge Anderson raced against time to prevent the mass murdering zombies from claiming the last survivors. Dredd and Anderson succeeded in capturing Judge Fear, but the other Dark Judges escaped and were last seen drifting in the empty void of space.

Dark Judges: Dominion will pick up where Dark Justice left off, as an unfortunate cargo ship stumbles upon the three figures and (foolishly) brings them on board. After killing or possessing the crew, the fearsome threesome travel to a colony planet and all hell breaks loose…

Nick Percival is excited to be working with the co-creator of the frightening foursome, saying:  “I’ve always wanted to work with John and we’d talked about a few things when he then contacted me about doing a new series with the Dark Judges, following on from when we last saw them. It’s going to be a very dark, disturbing take on the characters. I did a few test pics of the Judges which inspired him to take the story in a certain direction – very spooky stuff and I’m hoping to put my own spin on these classic villains and try not to repeat visually what’s been done before with them. I see Judge Death as a truly terrifying character and the new environment (there’ll be blood and snow!) that we’ll see these creatures in should help give it an original look. John’s scripts are great and it’s fantastic to finally work with him.”

For his part, John Wagner enjoys the way the characters are depicted:  “Nick’s art takes the Dark Judges to a new level of evil.”

The new series will begin Judge Dredd Megazine #386, published in print and digital by 2000 AD on 19 July 2017.
