Is Shane Black Set to Direct and Co-Write Doc Savage Film?

220px-ManofbronzebamaSo it seems the Man of Bronze himself is returning to the big screen and the man leading the project will be Shane ‘Iron man 3’ Black.

Fresh from his directorial and writing duties on Iron Man 3 Shane Shane will be taking on the world of pulp adventure by signing a deal with Sony to co-write and direct a Doc Savage film.

For those who don’t know Clark Savage Jr aka Doc Savage was a pulp hero character whose adventures were initially published during the 30’s and 40’s.

Doc Savage’s real name was Clark Savage, Jr. He was a physician, surgeon, scientist, adventurer, inventor, explorer, researcher, and, as revealed in The Polar Treasure, a musician. A team of scientists assembled by his father deliberately trained his mind and body to near-superhuman abilities almost from birth, giving him great strength and endurance, a photographic memory, a mastery of the martial arts, and vast knowledge of the sciences. Doc is also a master of disguise and an excellent imitator of voices.  – Wikipedia

After falling in love with all things pulp after seeing Raiders of the Lost Ark I went searching for more stuff in this new genre I had stumbled upon. My first stop was the Doc Savage novels and the old marvel comics. Yes there’s even a special place in my heart for the Doc Savage film that came out in the 70’s. I thought the casting of Ron Ely was spot on but that instead of taking thing a little more seriously they went down the camp route and the film almost became a parody of the character. I always thought a Doc Savage film could work if it’s in the right hands and after seeing Iron Man 3 I’m glad to see those hands belong to Shane Black.

All I hope is that Shane keeps the film set in the 30’s (no modern day reboot please) and we get to hear Doc deliver his oath…right let me see if I remember it….*coughs*

“Let me strive every moment of my life to make myself better and better, to the best of my ability, that all may profit by it. Let me think of the right and lend all my assistance to those who need it, with no regard for anything but justice. Let me take what comes with a smile, without loss of courage. Let me be considerate of my country, of my fellow citizens and my associates in everything I say and do. Let me do right to all, and wrong no man.”

You tell em Doc!
