Final Days of Kickstarter: Thunderbirds 1965: New Episodes From 1960s Recordings

With all the thousands of Kickstarters out there it’s easy to find a campaign you love but then forget all about it. If that is you gentle geek then have no fear because here at Geek Syndicate we have the solution.

The purpose of our Final Days of Kickstarter column is to feature those projects that are  near end of their campaigns. This means that any of you lot that are  flush with a little extra cash can jump onboard at the last minute.

Thunderbirds 1965: New Episodes From 1960s Recordings

Every Sunday at 6pm ( at least I think it was 6) I would be parked in front of the family TV. This was back when every room or shiny surface in a house didn’t double as a TV screen. On my lap would be perched a bowl of jelly and ice cream and by my side a mug of lemonade bigger than my head. Sat around me would be my mum, dad and three older brothers. Now at the same time around the UK I’m sure other kids were stuck watching Songs of Praise where as I was treated to watching the latest daring rescue being performed by the Thunderbirds.

Although my childhood now seems like one long blur of fragmented memories the one constant anchor to that time was that Sunday evening watch of Thunderbirds.

The show had action, suspense and adventure but all wrapped in the inspiring notion of a family that travelled anywhere on or off the planet when people needed saving. Yes they had fantastic vehicles and equipment to help them but these were not superheroes, they didn’t fight crime (well there was the odd episode) these were just flesh and blood heroes (well puppets but you get my point) doing what was right. I like to think that is why the show has endured down through the decades, picking up new fans along the way and why the series was relaunched this year on ITV.

As much as I enjoyed the relaunched cgi driven show a part of me missed the classic look and feel of the original series with the puppets, sets and that movie style feel I grew up with. Fortunately Stephen La Rivière  fellow Thunderbirds fan and maker of the fantastic documentary – Filmed in Supermarionation has been making plans to do something about that. His plan was simple but ambitious – to make three classic, never before seen, Thunderbirds episodes using original voice tracks and retro filmmaking techniques.

To celebrate its 50th anniversary we want to make a new, classic style episode of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson’s legendary puppet series Thunderbirds using original audio-only stories recorded in the 1960s.

Technology has moved on in five decades, but our goal is to produce an unashamedly retro episode made with many of the same ‘Supermarionation’ techniques used to bring the puppets and models to life in the 1960s.

I think this is a bloomin fantastic idea and one that well deserves to not only hit its Kickstarter but exceed it. Now if someone else could turn their attention towards bringing back Captain Scarlett that would be great – thank you in advance.

How long do I have?

The project currently has 7 days to go.

Where is the project currently at?

As of today the campaign has raised 171,385 out of a £75,000 goal. The reason the Kickstarter is still going is that the team now have enough cash to make 2 of the episodes but the dream is to do all three. To hit that target it needs to raise £195,000.

What’s in it for me?

These are just a few of perks that stood out for me.

A copy of a Kickstarter exclusive BLU-RAY featuring the finished production with special features.

PLUS – Your name will be listed in the special thanks section of the disc.

There was a perk which would get you a Blu-ray containing the episodes at a reduced price but that ship has sailed now. You can still get your mitts on a copy of the episode on Blu-Ray as well as DVD with a few extras as well.

Speaking of DVD’s…

DVD + COMMEMORATIVE PHOTO ALBUM

A Kickstarter exclusive DVD featuring the finished production with special features.
48 page retro-style magazine crammed with rare and previously unpublished stills from the original 1965 series of Thunderbirds.

PLUS – Your name will be listed in the special thanks section of the disc.

A retro-style mag with unpublished Thunderbirds pictures? I only have one thing to say to that.. .FAB!

PREVIEW SCREENING PACK

An invitation to an exclusive crew screening of our finished production before the discs are dispatched. This is an invitation only event and tickets will not be made available elsewhere.

Also includes:

– A Kickstarter exclusive DVD or BLU-RAY featuring the finished production with special features.
– 48 page retro-style magazine crammed with rare and previously unpublished stills from the original 1965 series of Thunderbirds.

Now as some you know Dave and I filmed a show for the BBC called Days of Fear of Wonder. Now part of that show involved us going along to the premiere of Filmed in Supermarionation so I believe me when I say that sitting in a screening theatre with a room full of Thunderbirds fans is a fantastic experience.

SET VISIT

Join fellow fans and witness the filming of the new anniversary episode.

Like the screening invite this is on the pricer end of the perks available but I thought it was worth a mention because…come on SET VISIT! I personally couldn’t go for one of these because I would be too tempted to slip Thunderbird 2 under my arm and make a break for it.

Where can I find out more?
