SDCC 2013: The Maze Runner at Nerd HQ

nerdhq13homepageThis was my third year back at Nerd HQ and it was bigger and better than ever with a move to the larger Petco Park. The nerdtastic fan experience put on by Zachary Levi’s The Nerd Machine pulled out all the stops to benefit Operation Smile and the first Conversation for a Cause that I attended was for the upcoming dystopian flick The Maze Runner.

The film is based on the first of a trilogy from James Dashner. It’s set in a post-apocalyptic world, where young Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) is deposited in a community of boys with no memory of his past. Soon he realizes that they’re all trapped in a maze that will require him to join forces with fellow “runners” for a shot at escape.

When lead actor Dylan O’Brien came out on stage, the sheer amount and volume of shrieking was piercing (and a bit impressive). It also had me scratching my head until my ‘ah ha’ moment when someone asked a question about his other roles and mentioned MTV’s Teen Wolf. That explained the Beatles-esque screaming!

The book has elements from Lord of the Flies, Hunger Games, Ender’s Game and more. The best part was getting to see a sneak peak trailer that director Wes Ball put together only a few days before arriving in San Diego. The film looks to be a heart-stopping thriller and I’m really excited to see it come out in February 2014.

Check out our photo gallery below and if you haven’t finished reading the book, like me, there might be some slight spoilers in the panel video:
