All New Trailer for Real Steel Starring Hugh Jackman

A gritty, white-knuckle, action ride set in the near-future where the sport of boxing has gone high-tech, “Real Steel” stars Hugh Jackman as Charlie Kenton, a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring. Now nothing but a small-time promoter, Charlie earns just enough money piecing together low-end bots from scrap metal to get from one underground boxing venue to the next. When Charlie hits rock bottom, he reluctantly teams up with his estranged son Max (Dakota Goyo) to build and train a championshipcontender. As the stakes in the brutal, no-holds-barred arena are raised, Charlie and Max, against all odds, get one last shot at a comeback.

My first thought after watching the trailer for Real Steel is that it reminded me of a game I used to have as a kid. The game allowed you and your opponent to control a toy boxer and bascially the first boxer to lose his head was the loser. I really wish I could remember the name of that game as it really feels like it may been the inspiration for Real Steel.

At the moment I have no idea what to make of this film. I think it will either be a great fun watch or awful (hopefully in a watch with a lot of beer kind of way). Still the some of the robot on robot action (ok that sounded wrong) looks very cool as did the clips of Hugh Jackman training his new robotic protege. At least the idea is different (or a different spin on the Rocky premise) and it’s not a sequel or a remake. Kid is kinda annoying though but hopefully he’ll grow on me as the film goes on.

  1. The toy you’re thinking of was called Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots (or Raving Bonkers here in the UK)

As for the Real Steel trailer – where the hell did that annoying kid come from?? Not a sniff of him in trailer 1 but he’s all over this one! Interest in Real Steel waning…

  2. Not a remake per-se, but based on the Twilight Zone episode ‘Steel’ starring Lee Marvin. A story by Richard Matheson. I’d imagine only the basic premise of robot boxing and the main character being a washed up ex boxer remains intact. It would be nice if it still has the heart of that episode.
