Buffy the Reboot…Vampire Slayer is coming without Joss Whedon

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (film)

I saw the news of a Buffy reboot and my first thought was ‘this is a wind up right?’ I then read further and realised that nope once again Hollywood has turned on the reboot machine and this time pointed it at Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Now on the one hand some might say this was a good thing as given the initial movie was pretty poor the idea of having a second crack at the movie version might actually work epsecially given the success of the series and having Joss Whedon on board….and yes here comes the bad news that last part was a lie. It appears that Joss will have no involvement with the new film whatsoever, the script will be penned by Whit Anderson.

My first reaction is that it’s a bad idea and a cheap cash in on the current vampire craze but like anything I will wait until I hear and see more before I drive a stake through this reboot. After all the last time I really bitched on a reboot idea it was Star Trek (although that was JJ Abrams behind the wheel) and we all know how that turned out.

This what the Joss had to say on the matter.

This is a sad, sad reflection on our times, when people must feed off the carcasses of beloved stories from their youths — just because they can’t think of an original idea of their own, like I did with my Avengers idea that I made up myself.

Obviously I have strong, mixed emotions about something like this. My first reaction upon hearing who was writing it was, “Whit Stillman AND Wes Anderson? This is gonna be the most sardonically adorable movie EVER.” Apparently I was misinformed. Then I thought, “I’ll make a mint! This is worth more than all my Toy Story residuals combined!” Apparently I am seldom informed of anything. And possibly a little slow. But seriously, are vampires even popular any more?

I always hoped that Buffy would live on even after my death. But, you know, AFTER. I don’t love the idea of my creation in other hands, but I’m also well aware that many more hands than mine went into making that show what it was. And there is no legal grounds for doing anything other than sighing audibly. I can’t wish people who are passionate about my little myth ill. I can, however, take this time to announce that I’m making a Batman movie. Because there’s a franchise that truly needs updating. So look for The Dark Knight Rises Way Earlier Than That Other One And Also More Cheaply And In Toronto, rebooting into a theater near you.

Leave me to my pain! Sincerely, Joss Whedon.

I read this quite a while ago, but everyone seemed to read it yesterday…must have been ahead through epic use of my Tardis 😉

I won’t be watching it…I say that, I probably will, to poke out all flaws and take the Michael out of it, bloody awful, and as ever, Whedon is correct…it is a sad reflection on our times. Srsly, what’s with all the remakes? Some films are being remade only a few years after initial release!!

  2. oh Christ why! they could of waited 2 years and seen that Joss is going to make one hell of an avengers movie! then you snap him up and get him to do his Buffy movie and use the success of Avengers to sell it to the mainstream audience!

I can just see this turning into a moody Twilight rip off and it will get lost in the sea of other crappy vampire/werewolf/Justin Bieber movies
