Do We Want a Darker and Edgier Green Lantern Sequel?

According to Warner Bros. President Jeff Robinov yes we do and he’s hoping that the script for Green Lantern 2 will give us that.

Now I enjoyed Green Lantern but the box office didn’t share that view and the film had pretty poor showing at the box office overall. Despite that Warner Bros are still trying to find a way to move forward with a follow-up film. The powers that be at Warners now have an idea about what was wrong with the first film and how they should approach the sequel.

“We had a decent opening so we learned there is an audience,” said Warner Bros. film group President Jeff Robinov, pointing to the film’s box office debut of $53 million. “To go forward we need to make it a little edgier and darker with more emphasis on action…. And we have to find a way to balance the time the movie spends in space verses on Earth.”

Personally I don’t think Green Lantern 2 needs to be edgier or darker…not every film needs to have the same tone as Batman Begins or Dark Knight.  Yes I think the film needed a better plot and the earth/cosmic balance was all wrong but I thought the tone was fine. It gave you a film the whole family could watch. I recently saw Captain America and the tone wasn’t that heavy it was a light and fun pulp adventure film, it didn’t need to show cap experiencing the horrors of WWII full on because it’s not that sort of film. Whenever Hal wasn’t on earth it felt like full on crazy cosmic pulp, the kind we don’t get anymore because every space show/film has to be gritty and bleak these days. As for the action I think everyone has gotten used to the fact  that for some reason (unless you’re Captain America) there is far less action in the origin film than the sequel. Telling me you’re going to have more action in the Green Lantern sequel is kind of stating the obvious really.

Do I want to see more solid GL 2 with a better script and more rounded characters…hell yes. Do I want it grittier, edgier and darker….no thanks I’m good.
