Hugh Jackman’s Real Steel gets the green light

We talked about this potential Sci-fi film, based on a short story by Richard Matheson, some time ago. It seems that the folks over at Dreamworks liked the idea and the film has now been greenlit with a production start date of June 2010.

Hugh Jackman will star in this, Rocky style, story with a sci-fi twist. In the film Jackman plays a fighter in an age when human boxers are being replaced by Robots. In this new mechanised sport Jackman takes on the role of a Robot Boxing promoter(yes that’s what I said) who together with his 11-year old son and a down on his luck Robot must fight their way back to the top.

I have to admit as plots go it’s familiar and yet completely out there and I have no idea what to expect. It sounds like a cross between Robocop and Rocky, which necessarily a bad thing.

This is either going to be spectacular good or a property that should have been thrown on the scrap heap before filming started. Still though with Jackman in the lead and Steven Spielberg behind the scenes I’m hoping for the best.
