Well I guess it was hardly a surprise that given the remake of the classic 80’s flick Karate Kid made a shed of cash (around $300 million worldwide) a sequel would go into development before you could say “Pick up your Jacket” (see the film and that phrase may actually make sense).

Cyrus Voris and Ethan Reiff are moving from kung fu to karate.

The duo, who wrote 2008’s “Kung Fu Panda,” have been tapped to pen the sequel to “The Karate Kid,” Sony’s surprise summer hit that Will Smith produced and starred his son Jaden Smith. – Heat Vision

The question now is whether they will use any of the story elements of the original Karate kid or use this as an opportunity to come up with a completely original story. I watched the new Karate Kid and depsite my usual ‘Why do we need a remake?’ I found myself enjoying the film.

Both the main leads, Jaden Smith (Dre) and Jackie Chan (Mr Han) were likable and worked well off each other. I couldn’t stand Dre’s  mum and if they want to drop her from the sequel that would be fine with me. I still looked kinda wrong seeing kids, who liked they were ten (yes I know he’s not ten) kicking the crap out of each other and nearly getting it on(you know what I mean) but still it was a fun ninety minutes.

If this news is true and they are going with the sequel I hope they do go with a new story rather than rehashing the original sequel plot.
