Marvel Mutterings: Phase 3, Dr Strange & The Age of Ultron

This week: details of Marvel Phase 3’s films, a trailer for Avengers 2, and casting for Dr Strange!

Marvel: Phase 3: not to be undone by Warner Bros / DC’s recent long term plans, Marvel hit back with their own view of the future:

  • Captain America 3, to be subtitled Civil War, will be released on 6 May 2016, and will see Cap Am pitted against Iron Man / Tony Stark, as per the classic comic story. Rumours are abound that Sony Picture have done a deal with Marvel, and may well “loan” them Spider-Man for inclusion in this story. The plot will see the Cap opposed to the Superhuman Registration Act, which is supported by Tony Stark. As there is no Iron Man 4 announced, expectations are high that Robert Downey Jr will be returning to play Ol’ Shellhead. However, it might also see Chris Evans duck out and have Steve Rogers abandon the title of Captain America with either Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) stepping in to take his place… or will it be Don Cheadle’s Rhodey finally replacing Tony Stark as Iron Man?
  • Guardians Of The Galaxy 2 gets a new release date of 5 May 2017.
  • Thor (and that half-brother of his) to return in Thor: Ragnarok on 27 July 2017.
  • Black Panther, Marvel’s flagship black superhero, will debut in Cap 3, and then get his own movie on 3 November 2017. He’ll be played by Chadwick Boseman.
  • Captain Marvel will beat Black Widow to become Marvel’s first female lead on 6 July 2018, confirming that it will be a Carol Danvers oriented movie – and also beating DC to the punch with their Captain Marvel film, SHAZAM.
  • Inhumans is set for a 2 November 2018 release
  • The Avengers trilogy will now be four movies as Infinity War is split into two parts:  Part 1 and Part 2, set for 4 May 2018 and 3 May 2019 releases. The internet also went into meltdown after this cam-footage was release of the teaser for Infinity War… catch the last few seconds’ reaction:

Avengers 2: in case you missed it, there is finally a first trailer for the Age of Ultron, and my – it looks awesome:

Dr Strange: It’s been months of interweb speculation, but the smart money seems to have now settled on the voice of Smaug, Benedict Cumberbatch, as playing the titular role in Marvel’s upcoming Doctor Strange movie; Cumberbatch is said to be in “final negotiations” to take the role, but Marvel are keeping quiet (in fact rumour has it that Kevin Feige explicitly denied it?) . Previous names linked with the role included Joaquin Phoenix, and The Dark Knight’s Bane, Tom Hardy. Marvel’s Doctor Stephen Strange was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, and was a former neurosurgeon who transforms into the “Sorceror Supreme”, a magic-embued guardian who also became an integral member of the Avengers and the Defenders. The character first appeared in a Sixties Marvel comic book, Strange Tales, and also appeared in an animated, straight-to-DVD feature, Doctor Strange: The Sorcerer Supreme, in 2007. The new Doctor Strange film is due for release on November 4th, 2016.
