Robocop Blu-Ray / DVD Release… Er, Statue Not Quite Ready Yet!

Despite all of the web hype, the RoboCop statue was not – repeat – was not – unveiled yesteday in Motown. However, the newly redesigned RoboCop (taking a leaf out of Henry Ford’s book), or at least someone in a Robo-cop costume, threw out the opening pitch for the Detroit Tigers instead!

The confusion started over a promotion for the Blu-ray DVD release of the RoboCop reboot:

“The city of Detroit unveils a metal memorial to one of its most famous sons this week as an internet campaign to honour Officer Alex Murphy’s robotic alter ego reaches a climax. Timed to perfection for the UK digital release of José Padilha’s action-packed sci-fi saga, ‘Robocop Day’ will see the citizens of Detroit treated to a range of robo-related activity that will include appearances from the cyborg himself and, most significantly, an announcement about the long-discussed crowd funded statue that sparked an internet storm nearly three years ago. Despite an initially cool reaction to the planned statue from Detroit’s City Hall, public demand has led to the 10-foot statue becoming a reality now fully endorsed by public office. Tomorrow, the mayor himself will be marking Robocop Day at the Detroit Police Department before Officer Murphy sets off to protect the city with his contemporary counterparts.”

The Imagination Station, the non-profit Kickstarter funded group, behind the making of the statue, posted an update saying why the statue was not being unveiled: “To be clear: the RoboCop statue is still on track to be finished later this year and is still in the hands of Giorgio Gikas at Venus Bronze Works in Detroit, but news reports about it being unveiled today are incorrect. All official updates will come through this page. Thank you for your cooperation, and Go Tigers!” (see Kickstarter)

And Robocop continued to drop by some other Detroit landmarks whilst touring the city!
