Blood Sport Aims To Help Gamers Give Blood in a Fun Way

Update 24.11.14 21:50: Kickstarter is now showing this message about this project:

Funding Suspended Funding for this project was suspended about 5 hours ago.

It doesn’t give more information sadly.

Original Story: Gamers are always on the lookout for the next peripheral that might take their hobby to another level of immersion and enjoyment. How many, I wonder, would fancy being strapped to a machine that takes blood every time you lose blood in-game? That is the aim of the latest Kickstarter from Brand & Grotesque, and they are hoping to raise $250,000 by Jan 3rd 2015.

Blood Sport 01

Blood Sport basically functions by using the moment the control pad rumbles to send a signal to a small Arduino board which is then linked to a blood collection machine. Every time your controller rumbles, the machine takes some blood. The Arduino board keeps the blood machine going but also crucially monitors how much blood has been taken so that you don’t conk out while playing.

If you are like me, you will have read this and thought “Who the heck would want to do that? Crazy people!”. Brand & Grotesque say that the real aim is to develop a multi-player unit that can be taken on the road to blood donation gaming events, something which makes a whole lot of sense when you consider the always ongoing need for blood donations. In that light, it appears less crazy and more brilliant, in my opinion at least.

I genuinely hope they reach their funding goal and can get this project up and running. If you’d like to back it, check out their Kickstarter here.
