Cubus Games are a Spanish company dedicated to producing Choose Your Own Adventure style gamebook apps. Their latest game is Deadman Diaries and it launches on Android and iOS devices today, retailing at £0.99 to UK buyers.
Deadman Diaries takes the gamebook format and twists it somewhat. Here’s the official synopsis of the game:
Using the form of a personal diary, something new in the gamebooks world, readers are immersed in the life of John Riggs, a bank worker who has to pay off a gambling debt that will lead him to different illegal, and often lethal, situations.
Readers are given different options and can choose between trying to save the character or killing him off in as many ways as possible.
The developers have crafted this in a Noir Thriller style and the art for the game is suitable for this genre. I’m intrigued by the premise and how the game progresses given that readers can kill the titular Deadman (John Riggs) in a vast number of ways. I’ve been a fan of the adventure gamebook since I was small and any new twist to the genre is welcome. Deadman Diaries certainly looks great, with a distinctive visual style and an interesting manner of progressing the adventure. The concept of playing through not as the active participant but as someone who has found a dead person’s diary is interesting … though I wonder whether morbid curiosity would keep me coming back for more and find me getting Riggs killed in more and more ways …
