Finally, End of the Road for Playstation 2

PS2First released in March 2000 in Japan as the follow up to the successful Playstation or PS1, it looks like its finally the end of the road for the Playstation 2. Sony have announced that they are to stop shipping PS2 systems in Japan

The PS2 has sold over 150 million units globally and have continued to sell as well as receive some new games release even though the PS3 has been available for the last 6 years. With the announcement by Sony that it will stop shipping units in its home country of Japan it finally looks like the end of the road how come for the system. Actual dates for the final shipment has not been given.

Sony have also not confirmed its plans on shipping Ps2′ in other countries but with the end coming in Japan it’s only a matter of time before all global shipments come to an end.

This announcement will now doubt fuel speculation on the PS4 arriving in 2013 as Sony will most likely not want to be manufacturing 3 different consoles at the same time and the end of the Ps2 will allow Sony to maintain the same 2 console strategy with the PS3  continuing to be shipped alongside the PS4 for the next few years.

  1. PS4 will not be arriving in 2013 and I have no idea why anyone would come to that conclusion. Sony’s number of consoles has nothing to do with whether or not a new one is released. The only thing that may happen is that there may be an announcement at this summer’s E3 but I find that unlikely, as well.

You might be surprised that the next Playstation will be announced at E3 or some point this year. We may not see in in 2013 but will definitely see it in 2014. Sony did a similar thing with PS1 then shortly announced the PS3 after. They will not make the mistake of launching the PS4 far too long after the Wi U or the next Xbox which is also rumoured to be revealed at some point this year.
