iOS & Android continue closing the gap in the mobile gaming market

Smartphone/mobile gaming and in particular with iOS and Android has continued to close the gap with portable games consoles such as the Nintendo DSi and Sony PSP and also to increase their revenue sales of video games in total in the US.

According to data from Flurry and NPDGroup, iOS and Android are gaining increased amounts of the revenue in the portable gaming software market, with the Nintendo DS’s dominant market share dropping from 70 percent in 2009 to just 57 percent in 2010.

The charts also shows that although iOS and Android have taken share from the PSP and DS, they have not effected consoles sales which have grown in the same period whereas the portable market has fallen. It will be interesting to see how the 3DS and upcoming PSP2/NGP change things.
