Prison Break video game announced

A bit early to know what to make of this story:

“Who doesn’t love the thrill of a prison break? It’s a great basis for any video game, but even better when utilizing the intricate storyline and colorful characters created for the Fox series,” says Gary Rosenfeld, Senior Vice President of New Media for Fox Licensing.

The first couple of seasons of Prison Break were really popular in our house, but the idea of a cross-platform game based on the show is tough to get a handle on.

For a start, once the first season ended, the show went in a bunch of very different directions, so basing a game on that first year – as this one promises to do – seems unrepresentative of the show as a whole. Quite aside from the fact that the timing is a little odd, considering that the show itself was recently quite unceremoniously ended.

The thing that makes it potentially more interesting is also the thing that brings with it the most baggage:

The protagonist of the “Prison Break” game is Company agent Tom Paxton. He is sent to the Fox River State Penitentiary to find out why Michael Scofield (the hero of the TV series), a man without a previous criminal record, became a bank robber. The storyline runs parallel to the first season of “Prison Break”: Paxton encounters several characters from the series and experiences key events from his own perspective.

I’ve loved the idea of interlocking narratives and different viewpoints on familiar scenarios since first seeing both sides of that scene where the Avengers and the Fantastic Four meet on a spaceship in 1980s Marvel comics… You know the one – I think they showed it again as part of the recent Skrull invasion.

Yeah, I should have just said “since reading Rashomon in it’s original language at the age of seven”, but sadly I’m just not that awesome.

So the idea of a new angle on the old story is still appealing, plus it solves the problem of setting a game in the already established and rigid narrative of a TV show.

However, it’s not the first time a game has tried this tack on a continuity-based property – the closest relative to this is the “Lost” game of a couple of years ago – and it hasn’t always been executed as well as it could be.

The game allows the player to “use diverse climbing and stealth skills”, while exploring “numerous locations of the series”, so expect a lot of sneaking around in concrete prison corridors, and… climbing around in water pipes. Still, as odd as that sounds, there’s plenty of time for them to make something interesting of this property, so we’ll see.
