After a few details were leaked over the weekend, Warner Bros. Games have announced today that Middle-Earth: Shadow of War is scheduled for an August 2017 release. A sequel to 2015’s rather excellent Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor, Shadow of War sees players return to Mordor as the Wraith-ranger Talion. This time Talion and the elf-prince Celebrimdor to whom he is soul-bound must weild a newly forged ring of power and raise an army to fight against Sauron for control of Mordor.
The innovative Nemesis System which saw players fight against orc captains unique to their gameplay with varying strengths and weaknesses is back and expanded. This time, players will have followers – captains on their side as well as dynamic Nemesis fortresses acting as strongholds across the barren landscape.
I absolutely loved the first game, which I purchased on a whim and have been wondering about a return to the orc-filled kingdom for some time. Despite the fact that I’m reasonably sure Talion can’t actually win a war against Sauron (because Lord of the Rings), I am intrigued as to how the game will mesh with the book and / or film series. Roll on Summer!
