Troy Baker: More than a voice in Shadow of War

Troy Baker is one of the most prolific voice artists in gaming and animation and with good reason. Baker’s range is darn good and his delivery is always spot on. If you’re not sure who Troy Baker is, here is a very-abridged summary of some of his key roles. Check out IMDB for the full list of 305 acting credits.

  • Joel (The Last of Us)
  • Conan (Age of Conan)
  • Talion (Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor)
  • Batman (Telltale Batman, various LEGO games)
  • The Joker (Batman Arkham Origins)
  • Booker Dewitt (Bioshock Infinite)

Voice performance is an extremely important part of the game experience and a bad performance can really suck the immersion and enjoyment from a game and seeing Troy Baker on the credits is always a guarantee of some great acting from in-game characters.

In the forthcoming Middle Earth: Shadow of War, sequel to 2014’s epic and awesome Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor, Baker reprises his role as Talion, the former ranger who was brutally murdered and returned to quasi-life bonded with the wraith of an ancient Elven smith. However, his involvement in the game doesn’t stop there. WB Games have announced today that the voice artist is also serving as Performance Capture Director on the game – adding years of game and animation acting experience to the production on a whole new level.

Shadow of War is a game that is squarely on my radar. The game it follows was a surprise hit for me – I bought it on a whim with no real stake in its quality (I’m not the biggest Lord of the Rings fan and hadn’t quite realised how unique the Nemesis System would turn out to be) and it went on to become one of my picks for Game of the Year in 2014. I’ve been following Shadow of War relatively closely and have been impressed with what I am seeing. I’ve got it on digital pre-order already.

Originally slated for an August 2017 release, Shadow of War was recently delayed until October 10 2017 and I can’t wait to return to Mordor with Troy Baker as my voice in the Autumn months.

Okay, that ended weirder than I expected …
