Just like the film adaptation of 300, the Carl Rinsch directed 47 Ronin is not quite a proper history lesson on historical events. This trailer, though, shows that much greater liberties were taken with the story of the 47 Ronin than 300 did with the Battle of Thermopylae.
Keanu Reeves plays Kai, a man looking for vengeance after being imprisoned and enslaved. The titular samurai seem to take a big backseat to Keanu’s fictitious character, inserted into this real account as a “chosen one.”
47 Ronin also stars Hiroyuki Sanada (The Wolverine) as Kuranosuke Oishi, the historical leader of the 47 Ronin, Rinko Kikuchi (Pacific Rim) as Mizuki, Tadanobu Asano (Thor) as Lord Kira, and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (Revenge) as Shogun.
47 Ronin will come to theaters in late December.
