Abertoir 2011 Convention

For those of you unaware, there’s been a cracking little horror festival running in Aberystwyth for the last six years.  I wrote an article on it this time last year for the site which you can read here to get an overview of the event and an insight into the venue itself.  The location is the same this year but the event now spreads over 6 days and starts a little earlier each afternoon.

I’m coming to appreciate more and more that the horror genre covers a very broad spectrum: from supernatural to the psychological; the shocking to the hilarious; with diverse flavours to suit all tastes.  It is not a genre I seek out as a rule, but the sheer quality of entertainment on display last year and this has made this an unmissable event for me now.  I hope some of you will join me next year.

In addition to the wide ranging selection of Premieres and Classics, Special Guests, the brilliant Short Film Competition (click here for details on last year’s crop), the one-man Stage Show and Themed Disco, this year has seen the further addition of an Audience-interactive Debate, an Art Installation, movie-poster Gallery and a good old fashioned Pub Quiz.

Over the next few days I’ll be bringing you reviews of the best films I’ve seen here, including a comprehensive run down of the top-ten short films and how you can get to see them.

I’ve been tweeting as I’ve gone along.  If you’ve missed them or are not currently following me you can do so @Dion_Scrolls.  On Day 1 I was using the hashtag #Abertoir but the organisers have put me on to #abertoir2011 for the rest of the fest to try to bring everyone’s posts together.  Give it a look see.
