ADVANCED REVIEW: Gladstone’s School for World Conquerors #2

Firstly, if you have no idea what Gladstone’s School for World Conquerors (Story by Mark Andrew Smith, Art by Armand Villavert) is, please, please go and read my review of Issue 1 (as I don’t want to be repeating myself too much!). That review is available here! Thank you!

In my opinion, issue 1 was a slow start to this comic book series, and unfortunately I have to say the same for about the first third of issue 2. Again, it starts off quite slowly. HOWEVER, once you have muscled your way through this part of the comic, the pace really picks up. The action begins, the story starts to unfold, and there are plenty of twists and turns to keep you occupied. The cover shows the kids watching an epic battle between hero and villain, but other epic battles are involved in this issue, leaving you in a place you didn’t quite expect.  I should think that this twist in the tail will run throughout the comic series, and I for one cannot wait to find out what our child-villain-prodigies will do if [and hopefully when!] they find out about it!

Whilst it didn’t make me laugh as much as issue 1 did, it is still pretty funny in places; whether your empathising with the school janitor, remembering science experiments gone wrong at school, or enjoying comedy TV commentators you’ll find yourself, at the very least, smiling with mirth if not actually giggling to yourself.

I still love the artwork, and the colours are so bright and vivid; Armand Villavert (Colours by Carlos Carrasco and Andre Poulain) has done another great job. The detail is at the right level, not too extreme but enough that you can look through the comic again and pick up nice little titbits that you may have missed first time round. I really love the general “feel” of this comic that comes from the quality of the art.

All in all, now that the story has started to pick up a bit, I really am enjoying this comic more. I would like to see the next issue start with the pace that this one finished at, so that characters and plot lines evolve more quickly.

I will give this issue (and the series to date) 3.5 out of 5, and I hope that each issue improves on the last.

Gladstone’s School for World Conquerors #2 will be released on Wednesday June 15 2011.
