The Summer of Indie – Comic Review: Gladstone’s School for World Conquerors Issue 3

As per usual, if you don’t know about Gladstone’s School for World Conquerors, or you haven’t read my previous reviews, please read my review of Issue 1 and Issue 2 before reading on! Thanks 🙂

Well, firstly, I’d like to say as usual the colour and drawing guys have done their utmost to keep this comic series fresh and fun. Oh, and this is my favorite cover so far from this series. Again, I have no complaints regarding the artwork or colouring. I love it! The detail in some of the action scenes are great, and the way this comic is drawn now is really pulling me in and through the story.

Now the story line itself has come on in leaps and bounds in this issue, and boy am I glad. Issue 1 and Issue 2 have been slow in setting the scene, but now excitement is building throughout the story. In this issue we are given more information about certain characters in the school (finally the unimaginatively named “Mummy Girl” is given an imaginative real name!), and some of the parents of our little darlings are introduced. The Skull family are finally given a great amount of frames, and we get to meet Kid Nefarious’s lovey-dovey parents, with hilarious results (well hilarious might be a bit strong, but it certainly made me giggle). An additional class is introduced in “mystic arts”, and some of the fiction involved within ‘school time’ is very well evolved, and the writing is certainly off the wall.

Underlying story lines are also further explored, which turn the whole world of super-villainy on it’s head and with each turn of the page leaves you unsure of what might happen next; perhaps a new tier of super-super-villains, or maybe nothing at all, and quite possibly, anything in between.

Whilst the story is interesting and exciting, I sometimes do find it a little confused. It flits about a lot, and each issue tends to be split into 3 or more fairly unrelated parts, how they will end up drawing all this parts together in the future is what will keep me reading.

All in all, I enjoyed this episode very much, I found it exciting and engaging; as usual I found it beautiful to look at. Here’s hoping that the series continues to improve as quickly as it has been.

Issue number 3 of Gladstone’s School for World Conquerors is due for release on Wednesday 13 July.
