Advert Break: The Mervyn Stone Mysteries – Columbo meets Blake’s 7

Mervyn Stone press release

Big Finish Books is proud to announce the forthcoming release of the Mervyn Stone Mysteries by award-winning comedy writer Nev Fountain. The three original novels are a mix of comic detective fiction and cheesy old TV sci-fi.

l  “Fiendish and funny, Columbo meets Blake’s 7 with gags – and sex!” – David Tennant.

The books all feature Mervyn Stone, former script editor of Vixens from the Void, a science fiction TV show from the 1980s. Mervyn now spends his time going to conventions, doing DVD commentaries… and solving murders.

l  “As well as being a very good crime novel,Cursed Among Sequels is a blissfully accurate and funny satire on the idiocies of television.” – Simon Brett

Mervyn just can’t help it. It’s that script editor brain of his.  He just keeps spotting plot-holes and discovering whodunnit.

The three novels – Geek Tragedy, DVD Extras Include: Murder and Cursed Among Sequels – are published in hardback and special leather-bound editions in October 2010. The forewords are by David Quantick (Harry Hill’s TV Burp), Jon Culshaw (The Impressions Show) and Ally Ross (TV critic for the Sun).

A series of Mervyn Stone podcasts are available at, in which Mervyn solves a mini-mystery. The Mervyn Stone Facebook group already has 400 fans – for a TV show that never existed. You can also follow Mervyn Stone on Twitter.

Nev Fountain is a multi-award winning writer, who has worked mainly in radio and television comedy. He was a principal writer on the award-winning Dead Ringers, in both its radio and TV incarnations, and has contributed to shows including  Have I Got News For You, The Impressions Show, 2DTV, The News Quiz, Loose Ends and his own radio sitcom Elephants to Catch Eels.

He is currently working on a children’s sitcom, Scoop, which he helped to devise, and is a gag writer for satirical magazine Private Eye.

During the course of writing the Mervyn Stone Mysteries, Nev attended several Doctor Who conventions – he assures us that, even if an amusing murder hasn’t happened during one, it’s just a matter of time.

Big Finish’s previous books include the triple award-winning Love Songs for the Shy and Cynical by Robert Shearman and After the Break-Up by Carrie Sutton.
