Artemis Fowl to Get the Hollywood Treatment

Artemis-Fowl
Best-selling children’s book series Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer is to follow in the footsteps of other books such as Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Northern Lights and Enders Game and is finally being adapted for the big screen.  Co-produced by Disney and Harvey Weinstein, and executive produced by Robert De Niro – I know, I for one am really excited by this news.

The film will be based on the first two books of the series Artemis Fowl and Artemis Fowl: The Arctic Incident. If you have been living under a rock and have no idea who Artemis Fowl is then check out the info below:

ARTEMIS FOWL: Artemis Fowl is the most ingenious criminal mastermind in history and with his trusty sidekicks, Butler and Juliet, in tow he hatches a cunning plot to divest the fairy folk of their pot of gold. Of course, he isn’t foolish enough to believe in all that “gold at the end of the rainbow” nonsense. Rather, he knows that the only way to separate the little people from their stash is to kidnap one of their number and wait for the ransom to arrive. But when the time comes to put his plan into action he reckons without Captain Holly Short of the LEPrecon (Lower Elements Police Reconnaissance) Unit–a sort of extra small Clarice Starling with pointy ears and wings–and her senior officer Commander Root, a man (sorry, elf) who will stop at nothing to get her back.

Having Disney as a co-producer doesn’t overly fill me with much optimism – The Chronicles of Narnia anyone???, however the inclusion of Weinstein makes it a little more interesting. He has been behind such films as The Kings Speech, Shakespeare In Love and The Artist, and we know how good these films were!

Author Eoin Colfer won’t be involved in the film version, with the screenplay written by Michael Goldenberg, who wrote the screenplay for Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix.

No actors have been cast yet – but I look forward to seeing where this new project goes. Stay tuned for further info.
