DVD REVIEW: Farscape

I remember catching this show by accident when it initially aired and my first thoughts were “what the hell is this crazy show” and I never looked back.

John Crichton is an astronaut and test pilot who, during a mission of his own design, is flung through a wormhole and gets lost in a galaxy far from home. He finds himself in the middle of a battle, surrounded by hostile aliens, soaring through space inside a glorious living space ship called Moya. He soon discovers that Moya is populated by a band of escaping alien prisoners. Hunted by the relentless Peacekeepers, he allies himself with his alien fellow refugees and searches for a way home.

Prepare for the adventures of Farscape™ with Moya’s crew – Crichton, Peacekeeper Aeryn Sun, warrior Ka D’Argo, azure priestess Zhaan, spiritely thief Chiana, Dominar Rygel, Pilot and many others.

Farscape is from The Henson company and the mind of Jim Henson. Running for 4 seasons and a mini series it was one of the most original shows out there while seeming so familiar borrowing ideas from lots of great shows like Buck Rodgers and Deep Space Nine to name but a few.

There was plenty of great characters that were played to perfection while doing some crazy stuff like a animated episode. Ben Browder played the human astronaut John Crichton who finds himself as the de facto leader and also trying to express his feelings for Aeryn Sun played by the gorgeous Claudia Black who seems to portray every emotion under a strong military exterior. The rest of cast are either under a lot of proshetics or voicing a puppet (this is Henson remember) but all give brilliant performances that will keep you coming back for more.

Watching the series on Blu ray really brought back the enjoyment I felt when I first watched the show. Unfortunately we only received season 4 to review so cannot say how the earlier seasons look now but if the ones I watched are anything to go by then fans will be pleased.

The episodes are clean and crisp which add to the whole experience of Farscape and in fact it is a shame we did not have this quality when it aired as I think the show might have lasted longer. Farscape is a BIG show with some big ideas and it really deserves the best.

The journey of John Crichton and the crew of Moya go on some of the strangest journeys you will ever see but just sit back and enjoy the ride. So what the Frell are you waiting for. Go buy it now!
