BOOK REVIEW: Evil Dark by Justin Gustanis

“My name’s Markowski. I carry a badge. Also a crucifix, some wooden stakes, big vial of holy water and a 9mm Beretta loaded with silver bullets.”A series of seemingly motiveless murders of supernatural creatures points to a vigilante targeting the supe community of Scranton.
Markowski wouldn’t normally have much of a problem with that, but his daughter may be next on the killer’s list…

Vampires and werewolves have become a part of our literary world.  But there are so many other undead creatures in our collective superstition that often get missed in our fictions.  Where are the ghouls, goblins, demons and fairies you might ask.  In Evil Dark, by Justin Gustainis covers a plethora of the undead as seen by hardnose Detective Markowski and his undead partner Karl Renfer in the city of Scranton, Pennsylvania. Markowski lives in a world where the life challenged have stepped out of the closet, declared themselves as, while not alive, at least not quite dead in the traditional sense, and the Supreme Court has ruled that they have rights, the same as everyone else, as long as they stick to blood banks and other legal methods of feeding.

However, not everyone thinks this is a good idea, especially the established Churches, and someone is killing witches, wizards, vampires, werewolves and all the creatures of the night.  In addition humans are being killed, in ways that look like the undead are involved, until forensics step in and find no trace of the creatures thought to be involved.  To make matters worse, someone is creating snuff films with demons.  With a range of suspects, from porn merchants, religious cults, newspaper editors, the various night life and even the FBI, Markowski has to find the links before someone starts a war between the living and undead.

I liked this book.  Great writing, well paced, with twists and turns at every angle, it throws a spotlight on our own society, making you question your own choices in life.
