BOOK REVIEW: Gods & Monsters: Unclean Spirits

Unclean Spirits Chuck Wendig adds to Abaddon Book’s series ‘Gods & Monsters’ with this new title. The gods are alive and out to cause as much mayhem as they possibly can – shocking I know!

The gods and goddesses are real. A polytheistic pantheon—a tangle of gods and divine hierarchies—once kept the world at an arm’s length, warring with one another, using mankind’s belief and devotion to give them power. In this way, the world had balance: a grim and bloody balance, but a balance just the same. But a single god sought dominance and as Lucifer fell to Hell, the gods and goddesses fell to earth. And it’s here they remain—seemingly eternal, masquerading as humans and managing only a fraction of the power they once had as gods. They fall to old patterns, collecting sycophants and worshippers in order to war against one another in the battle for the hearts of men. They bring with them demi-gods, and they bring with them their monstrous races—crass abnormalities created to serve the gods, who would do anything to reclaim the seat of true power.

Things haven’t been going well for Cason Cole for the last five years, not since he made a deal to save his wife and son, and bound himself into the service of a god.

However his master…boss (whatever you want to call him) has just been killed and suddenly Cason finds himself free. However his newly acquired freedom soon becomes sour when he finds his wife and son still under a spell, and have no memory of who he is. Cason, angry that his happy ending hasn’t turned out all that happy, journeys to set things right.

Along the way he’ll meet a severely burned man with a warped sense of humor, and a variety of gods and goddesses who all seem a bit more deranged than the last one.

Unclean Spirits is set in the Gods & Monsters universe, where the Gods and Goddesses of religion and mythology are not only real but creating chaos on Earth – some familiar some not.

The blurb on the back of the novel may not do the book justice, and it may take a little while to get going, but once it does, you wont be able to put it down as the action will draw you in.

A thoroughly entertaining and thrilling book. As already mentioned this is one of Abaddon Book’s Gods & Monsters series which is by a variety of different authors. I have not read any of the others, but this didn’t hinder me in any way and I still really enjoyed Unclean Spirits.

A great premise and very well carried out.
