SDCC 2011: Day 1 – Game of Thrones

I love Game of Thrones. How much?

So much that Mirjana and I waited three and a half hours to get into Ballroom 20 to see the first ever panel at Comic-Con! If that’s not dedication, I don’t know what is — except maybe the woman that was wandering around the convention center in Daenerys’ “costume” from the final scene of Season 1. Yeah – that’s not so much a costume as it is nakedness with baby dragons! How she got away with that one, I have no idea.

In any case, we were two of the lucky 4,000+ crowd that was admitted to a room full of very excited GoT fans. When moderator and author of the books, George R. R. Martin appeared, cheers thundered throughout. Being the person who created the source material for the show, he knows everything there is to know about these characters so it made the panel that much more interesting in my opinion.

In addition to a reel of Season 1’s exciting scenes, there were lots of tidbits of information revealed during the panel. The full panel and some of the highlights are available behind the cut!

  • The audition videos will be on the Season 1 DVD set (no date has been announced). Jason Momoa performed Khal Drogo’s “haka” war dance to win the role – that will be something to see! There’ll also be lots of great commentary from the writers and producers.
  • Emilia Clarke isn’t recognized when she’s out in about as her natural hair color isn’t platinum blonde. The only time she did, she got free froyo out of it! Kit Harington on the other hand gets the ole “Do I know you from somewhere?” question and his response is usually “Well actually…”
  • Martin also told Harington that he’s the next teen heartthrob which “scares the crap” out of him! He was also asked if he knew who Jon Snow’s mother is – the answer? No.
  • Lena Headey loves playing the not-so-nice (well evil really) Cersei Lannister and think she’s a misunderstood character. “You’re not playing to please anybody.”
  • A really funny story from Nikolaj was discussion about his…nose! On a previous movie shoot, a cameraman had come up to him at the wrap party and told him that when he saw “that nose”, he thought he was in big trouble! But it all worked out in the end.
  • Jason Momoa started shouting in Dothraki, which was fun for everyone to witness!
