Could Benedict Cumberbatch Be the Next Star Trek 2 Villain?

Word is spreading around the net that the voice of The Hobbit‘s Smaug the Dragon and Sherlock himself Benedict Cumberbatch, has landed the role of the villain in the Star Trek sequel. It seems to be Star Trek 2 casting week, as the first announcement was Doctor Who‘s Noel Clarke. This really is great news for both British actors and the Star Trek franchise.

The Sherlock actor would make a great villain but will it be Khan or Gary Mitchell? Only Abrams and his writing team know that for now.

The “Star Trek” sequel has added another major castmember: Benedict Cumberbatch has been cast in a lead role, TheWrap has confirmed. A spokesperson for Paramount would not confirm which role Cumberbatch will play.

While it is likely that Cumberbatch has been cast as the film’s primary villain, this news will undoubtedly confuse fans expecting a character reminiscent of Ricardo Montalban’s performance in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and that’s a good thing as no one wants an imitation. Regardless of whether or not the film will offer an alternate take on the character of Khan, Cumberbatch is an inspired choice as a villainous character opposite Captain Kirk and one that fans can easily get behind if they’ve seen his work.
