David Yates to direct bigscreen ‘Doctor Who’ Movie

The “Harry Potter” director is reportedly working with the BBC to turn everyone’s favorite sci-fi TV series “Doctor Who” into a full blown hollywood movie. Yates has told Variety that he is about to start working a “Doctor Who” movie with Jane Tranter, BBC Worldwide’s L.A. based exec VP of programming and production.

“We’re looking at writers now. We’re going to spend two to three years to get it right, It needs quite a radical transformation to take it into the bigger arena.”

“The notion of the time-travelling Time Lord is such a strong one, because you can express story and drama in any dimension or time,”

“Doctor Who,” is currently one of the Beeb’s most lucrative TV franchises as it gets sold all round the world.

Soo a Doctor Who movie……….. We’ve been here before and it wasn’t very good!

Add to that the fact that Yates himself has said that the movie will not follow current continuity! Yates said:

“We want a British sensibility, but having said that, Steve Kloves wrote the Potter films and captured that British sensibility perfectly, so we are looking at American writers too,”

I’m not liking this at all! Yates is a great director but do we really need a Doctor Who movie when the TV series is doing just fine on it’s own. This could turn out very bad. or it could turn out very good! What do you out there in geek land think? Who would you cast as The Doctor? Who would you have a a Companion?

I share your concern here but I did like McGann as the Doctor. As to who to cast how about the new Prof X, James McAvoy and as for a companion how about Vera Farmiga who always blows me away.
