DC Dispatches: Arrow, The Flash, Gotham and… Doc Savage?

Whether it’s Warner Bros, The CW or the DC stable themselves, here are the world-wide mutterings!

This week: Miho sins in Arrow, Gotham Freezes, Firestorm & Prof Zoom join The Flash… is Superman joining Arrow!? And who is “Doc Savage”?

The Flash: It’s all go at The Flash! First of all, it looks like Robbie Amell, (The Tomorrow People) and also cousin of Arrow‘s Stephen Amell has joined the cast as STAR Labs maintenance worker Ronnie Raymond (the CW didn’t have to look too far that one then!), and will appear in The Flash Episode 3. In DC comic, Ronnie Raymond is better known as the secret identity of Firestorm, a fusion-powered hero who gains his powers when a nuclear explosion fuses him with physicist Martin Stein – all set in STAR Labs, famous for giving birth to the likes of The Flash & Cyborg…“Geoff Johns, Andrew Kreisberg and myself designed the pilot and series to include Ronnie (aka Firestorm) – and to actually have someone with Robbie’s talent playing the role is beyond exciting,” said executive producer Greg Berlanti. “We can’t wait for viewers and fans of the character to check it out.” “I’m so excited to join forces with Greg Berlanti and The CW again on The Flash,” added Amell. “Being brought into the DC Universe is a dream, I can’t wait to get started!”

And according to this featurette:

Vampire Diaries star Rick Cosnett will become super-villain Professor Zoom, in The Flash.

Arrow: They could – no, they wouldn’t… Arrow Season 3 has added Superman Returns star Brandon Routh to the cast. No, not as the Big Boy Scout, but Routh will have a recurring role as Ray Palmer, a scientist and new owner of Queen Consolidated with a particular interest in the company’s Applied Sciences Division. However, there’s an expectation that Routh might be back in spandex, as in the comics Ray Palmer is also known as an incarnation of The Atom?

And there’s been a change at Arrow too. Peter Stormare (FargoThe Big Lebowski and Constantine),  has been cast in  Arrow Season 3 as Werner Zytle, best known classic Green Arrow supervillain Count Vertigo. But we’ve already had him, right?!? This will be the second incarnation of the character that has appeared in previous Arrow episodes, and reports are that he’s being “introduced as the new purveyor of the drug Vertigo, filling the role left vacant since the death of The Count” – to be known simply as Vertigo.

And as the finale of Season 2 shows Olly Queen shift his focus from his prison island to Hong Kong, Sin City star Devon Aoki has been confirmed in the cast of Season 3 as Tatsu Yamashiro. Stated as being one of Oliver Queen’s mentors in HK, Tatsu Yamashiro is known as Katana – on of Batman’s Outsiders team. Katana is master martial artist whose Soultaker sword contains the souls of all those it has killed – including her husband, who was murdered by his Yakuza brother!

Gotham: Fox’s ambitious pre-Batman saga Gotham has been gaining momentum and building up its roster of core villains for origin stories, and now it looks like Victor Fries, aka the cold-blooded mad scientist Mr Freeze, is being added to the mix. Director Danny Cannon has said, “I have a big pitch with Bruno [Heller, showrunner] about the Mr Freeze character, whose origins are uncertain. If I can win [executive producer] Geoff Johns over and if I can win Bruno over, then I look forward to the moment where that character can be realised.” Let’s hope the pitch doesn’t include the line, “You’re not sending me to the cooler!”

Doc Savage: so, anyone out there remember former TV Tarzan Ron Ely as The Man of Bronze? No? Good! It was a cheesy 70s kitsch superhero film best forgotten, along with The Hoff’s turn as Nick Fury! Well, the good news is that Marvel’s hammer god, Chris Hemsworth is reported to be the first choice for Shane Black’s upcoming Doc Savage movie. Black has supposedly met with Hemsworth to discuss the role, which is being given priority by Sony Pictures. Doc Savage, is a genius scientist/explorer, martial arts expert with some superhuman powers including a photographic memory and super physical strength – imagine Indiana Jones injected with Super-Soldier serum, with a dose of the Limitless drug… Hang one, this would make Hemsworth the umpteenth actor to play both a DC & Marvell character…

  1. Can you really count Doc Savage as a DC character? I don’t, but then I was reading Doc before he appeared in an illustrated form in the late ’70’s and ’80’s.

    • I know I used to read the Doc Savage comics that marvel were putting out back in the 70’s as well as the novels. However my first exposure to Doc was the film which as a kid I loved enough to go hunting for more Doc related stuff and I’m so glad I did. I didn’t mind the DC relaunch but hated the fact they moved him into the modern day, although the run was worth it for his 4 issue team up with the Shadow which was great!
