DC Dispatches: Gotham, The Flash & Son of Batman

Whether it’s Warner Bros, The CW or the DC stable themselves, here are the world-wide mutterings!

This week: It’s casting news at Gotham and for The Flash, and a preview of the animated Son of Batman

Gotham: Following the news last week that Ben is being cast as young Jim Gordon, Fox TV have been busy as several roles have also been cast:

  • Donal Logue (Blade, Terriers) has been cast as Jim Gordon’s maverick mentor Harvey Bullock.
  • Oswald Cobblepot, aka the Penguin, will be played by The Walking Dead‘s Robin Lord Taylor.
  • Alfred Pennyworth will be played by Dog Soldiers, Soldier and Hellraiser star Sean Pertwee (yes, and His son), harking back to the character’s back story as a former marine when he becomes the young Bruce Wayne’s protector.
  • Jim Gordon’s love interest and future wife Barbara Kean, will be played by Open Grave, Being Human and Merlin star Erin Richards.

The other interesting news was Gary Oldman confused reaction : ”A show without Batman?”. The definitive live action Gordon also had advice for his younger counterpart, who’ll be played in the show by Ben McKenzie, “Go back to the comic-books. That’s what I did… There’s great stuff about Gordon. He had a whole other life. I’m sure he’s going to be fabulous,” he added.

The Flash: The Grant Gustin-fronted Flash has cast the role of Iris West, “Barry Allen’s fast-talking, quick-witted best friend,”. In the comics she is of course his wife, aunt of the third Flash/first Kid Flash Wally West, and grandmother of the fourth Flash/second Kid Flash/Impulse Bart Allen. Iris West – who is the daughter of Allen’s mentor Detective West (Smash and Law & Order‘s Jesse L Martin) – will be played by Candice Patton. I guess that flirting with Felicity Smoak in Arrow was nothing more than that… Also theatrical dancer Carlos Valdes has been cast as Cisco Ramon, a genius engineer at STAR Labs, who in the comics becomes Vibe, able to emit and control powerful vibrational and/or sonic shockwaves. And in a nod to its past incarnation, The CW’s has also cast John Wesley Shipp in an unspecified role in the pilot that could lead to him getting a recurring role. Best known for Dawson’s Creek and Teen Wolf, Shipp played Barry Allen in 1990′s totally awful Flash TV show on CBS.

Son of Batman: I’m still excited about getting my copy of Justice League: War, I didn’t even realise that this was coming out – check out this 7 minute featurette for DC animated movie Son Of Batman with cast and crew interviews: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=n92FPVVO5rg
