Design a Costume for New Film Valerian and The City of A Thousand Planets

Are you a costume designer? Think you could design something for a new science fiction epic by Luc Besson? Then get sketching!

Director/writer Luc Besson is looking for designers to create the costumes for his next big film, Valerian and The City of A Thousand Planets. It stars Dane DeHaan, Cara Delevingne, and Clive Owen, so your design could be seen alongside some of the great and upcoming actors of today!

Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are special operatives for the government of the human territories charged with maintaining order throughout the universe. Valerian has more in mind than a professional relationship with his partner- blatantly chasing after her with propositions of romance. But his extensive history with women, and her traditional values, drive Laureline to continuously rebuff him.

Under directive from their Commander (Clive Owen), Valerian and Laureline embark on a mission to the breathtaking intergalactic city of Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis comprised of thousands of different species from all four corners of the universe. Alpha’s seventeen million inhabitants have converged over time- uniting their talents, technology and resources for the betterment of all. Unfortunately, not everyone on Alpha shares in these same objectives; in fact, unseen forces are at work, placing our race in great danger.

Sound like a film you’d love to design for? There are only a few requirements in the brief:

  • Must submit a front, profile and back view of the costume design
  • Must be designed to be approximately 2-3 meters (6-10 feet)
  • Must be a wearable costume (space for the head, two arms and two legs)
  • Must be designed with a solid material in mind (materials such as metal, plastic or fabric

You’re designing for a ‘political cocktail party’ in the year 2580, so make of that what you will. The short brief means you can go crazy with shape, colours and proportion, so let you imagination run wild!

Prizes include $1000, exposure on Yahoo Style and across the marketing materials and social media of the Valerain movie and of course the chance to have your work shown on the big screen. Here are Director Luc Besson and Costume Designer Olivier Bériot to give you more info:

Submit your design by November 27th to be in with a chance of winning one of the 20 places. All the details and T&Cs can be found on the TalentHouse website.

Go be creative.
