EA E3 Press Conference in Brief

Games from ten studios under the EA banner were showcased at this year’s E3 press conference from games publisher Electronic Arts including titles like: Dead Space 3, Madden NFL 13, Sim City and Sim City Social and more.

  • Dead Space 3 (Visceral Games): The third instalment in the space horror franchise will include new locations ranging from a frozen planet to the depths of space. The game will include drop-in, drop-out multiplayer co-op. Scheduled for release February 2013.
  • Madden NFL 13 (EA Sports): general manager Cam Weber described it as having “the most authentic gameplay we’ve ever created.” This is achieved through the game’s Infinity engine which considers the speed, mass, and momentum of a player to gauge how it moves. Outcomes are no longer predictable within the first few seconds and it will now be possible to turn the outcome of a match around before the end of play. The game will include role playing elements as a story mode will be included, where you will be able to chart a customisable football player’s career from rookie level through to the hall of fame. Multiconnectivity will be part of the game. You can stay connected to the game through PC, tablet or phone as you organise your  character’s career off the field.
  • Sim City (Maxis): Two games were announced in the Sim City franchise. Sim City Social, which will be available over Facebook, will bring a simplified Sim City experience that will give the throng of imitators (like Zynga’s Cityville) a run for their money. You will be able to be a good or evil city planner and play with your friends. The game will become active in the next few weeks, according to Maxis’ general manager Lucy Bradshaw. She also said “We’re taking back the crown of the city builders.”

A new full Sim City experience is in development for the PC. It will be the first game in the franchise to include the multiplayer. You will be able to play with friends or across your own region. “Dynamic challenges” are promised but we’ll have to see what that means in the coming months. The game is slated for release February 2013.

  • Battlefield 3 (DICE): No new game in the franchise was promised but Executive Producer Patrick Bach and Chief Operating Officer Peter Moore announced and launched Battlefield 3 Premium, an online subscription service. “Battlefield 3 Premium gives our fans a massive amount of gameplay, early access and exclusive offerings at an incredible price,” said Bach. “The sheer amount of brand new themed content available in Battlefield 3 Premium is staggering. We’re rolling out the red carpet and giving Battlefield 3 gamers the VIP treatment they deserve.” All five expansion packs will be made available on the service, weeks before they are put on general release. The expansion packs are Back to Karkand, Close Quarters, Armored Kill, Aftermath and End Game. It will cost $49.99 and is available now on PS3 and will be available on Xbox 360 and PC next week.
  • Star Wars: The Old Republic (Bioware): No new Bioware games coming out but plenty of new content for the video game.

Other titles include:

  • Medal of Honor: Warfighter
  • Madden NFL
  • UFC
  • Need for Speed: Most Wanted (Criterion)
  • Crysis 3 (Crytek)
