Abertoir 2012 – The Countdown Begins

For the last couple of years now I have had an absolute ball at the Abertoir Horror Festival, here in Aberystwyth.  I’ll be posting a few items up over the next month or two as we count down towards what I am sure will be the best fest yet.

The fun starts on the 6th November and runs right through to the 11th.

Early bird tickets go on sale THIS FRIDAY (7th September) and are priced at a mere £49.50.  That’ll get you free access to all the films (and all the other events) and you’ll also nab a neat 10% discount at the bar.  Being as the event is a massive 6 days long, that’s just £8.25 per dayBargain!

Once the early bird tickets have sold out, the ordinary ticket price will be £58 – still less than a tenner per day!

For those of you unfamiliar with the event itself, here’s my first impressions overview again.

Taking a look at the official poster here I can immediately see two things that get me VERY excited.  The first is that we’ll be treated to more Ghost Stories by MR James.  Click that link and you’ll read just why I thought the actor Robert Lloyd Parry produced The Best MR James Adaptation Ever.  Well, now he’s back with a new brace of spine-chilling tales from the undisputed master of the ghost story.

Secondly, I can see that there is a Q & A session with the cast and crew of Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut.  This can really only mean one thing – we are going to be treated to a cinematic showing of the uncut film first.  If you’ve ever read Clive Barker’s magnificent book Cabal, you’ll know what a great story it is.  When Barker got the go ahead to turn it into a feature film we were gifted with a beautiful but ultimately flawed monstrosity, an artistic masterpiece that was hacked apart by a film studio too scared to trust the source material.  Years later a full version of the film was uncovered and the folks behind Occupy Midian began their campaign to have the author’s true vision finally released to the world.  This is, in deference to the book, known as The Cabal Cut.

I cannot wait!

Coming up soon, I’ll be posting an interview with the organisers as well as a full run down of the schedule.  I’ll also be picking the collective brains of my Geek Syndicate colleagues to bring together our all-time favourite horror movies.  There may even be a podcast.  If you’ve got anything else Horror related that you’d like us to write about, let me know in the comments section below.  I’ll see what we can do.

Naturally once the festival gets going I’ll be posting reviews of the films, talks and other events but until then,

sleep fright… and pleasant screams     😀
