Fighting Fantasy Turns 30 with a New Ian Livingston Title

A great story gets you involved and makes you ask yourself: ‘what would I do in that situation?’ Such was the genius behind the role-playing fantasy series Fighting Fantasy created by Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone. Proper adventure stories where you, the reader, meaning me, the boy geek, chose what happened next. You were the hero and you would live or die by your choices.

It’s 30 years since Puffin first published The Warlock of Firetop Mountain and now, Ian Livingstone has published an all new original adventure Blood of the Zombies to celebrate the anniversary. In the original, the reader had to find the treasure belonging to a Warlock, deep within the titular mountain. In 1982, it was a classic, naive even, scenario. In 2012, it is blood and gore. Sign of the times.

Unlike almost all of the previous adventures in the series that had traditional fantasy tropes, this one is set in more modern times. You’re kidnapped and thrown in a cell with a horde of zombies. You have to defeat the mad scientist, creator of the zombies, and try not be bitten en route. In a nod to the past, however, the setting is a medieval style castle. Livingston said that he ‘really enjoyed writing it’, especially ‘devising fiendish tricks and traps to lure readers to their doom’. He also said he faced a dilemma when he wrote it. Was it aimed at the 10 year-old who read The Warlock of Firetop Mountain who is now in their 40s, or the 10 year-old now? He hopes it will ‘appeal to both’.

In keeping with the updated themes, you will also be able to ‘play’ the adventure as iPhone and Android apps.
