Four DC New 52 Titles Get the Chop, while Threshold Debuts

DC New 52 First Wave titles Blue Beetle, Frankenstein, Agent of S.H.A.D.E., Grifter, and Legion Lost end with issue 16 in January, at the same time that new title Threshold begins.  These titles were part of the first batch of New 52 comics that were released in September 2011.

Nothing has been announced regarding their replacements to round off the New 52 in their stead; however, there is loose speculation that the rumored Justice League of America or this weekend’s recently announced forthcoming Superman title helmed by Scott Snyder and Jim Lee could debut in February. Unfortunately, particularly with the latter possible title, the Snyder-Lee Superman is more likely to arrive much later next year – perhaps to coincide with the Man of Steel movie.

Meanwhile, the other recently cancelled title GI Combat (which ended last month) will be replaced by a new title exploring the cosmic heroes of the New 52. The new title, called Threshold, will be helmed by writer Keith Giffen, with Tom Raney on art for the main story and Scott Kolins on the Larfleeze ongoing backup story.

Threshold will spin out of events that transpire in the Green Lantern: New Guardians annual and the final issue of Blue Beetle in January. The New Guardians Annual will also be written by Keith Giffen. Giffen has achieved prior success revitalising cosmic characters over at Marvel. He spearheaded the original 2006 Annihilation event that led to the resurgence of the Guardians of the Galaxy in 2008, which is now slated to be among the next batch of movies set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In a recent interview with Newsarama, Keith Giffen described his take on Threshold and the DC cosmic universe, “I’m approaching it with the same mindset that I approached Annihilation, in that I’m saying, ‘Look at the all these great characters out there, and nobody’s doing anything interesting with them. Let’s see how much we can shake things up and have fun with this.’ ”

He then added, “Of course, instead of doing it with Marvel’s space characters, now I’ve got the fantastic DC characters to work with, like the Omega Men, Star Hawkins, Blue Beetle, Space Ranger, the original Starfire and a whole lot more great characters to mess around with.”

The cancelled titles were among the ten worst selling DC New 52 titles in September’s special “Zero Month,” according to Diamond sales records. Blue Beetle and Grifter sit at the bottom of the New 52 chart, first and second place of the ten worst sellers. Frankenstein Agent of S.H.A.D.E. held sixth place, and Legion Lost was in eighth place. Other worst selling titles which are currently still running past January are Deathstroke (tenth), Demon Knights (ninth), Savage Hawkman, (seventh), I, Vampire (fifth), DCU Presents (fourth), and The Fury of Firestorm (third).

Personally, this geek is rather surprised and saddened to see Blue Beetle go so soon, as it was a fun read every month. Legion Lost and Frankenstein both had promise, but obviously struggled to find an audience. Grifter is the only title of the four which proved to be a chaotic, inconsistent mess every month. Here’s hoping the four replacements, likely to debut in February, can do better.
