TV Review: Futurama Season 6 Episode 16 – Ghost in the Machines

After Fry saves the life of a human – rather than a robot – Bender feels under appreciated and kills himself. The problem is that his ‘ghost’ remains in the computing cloud and, after he strikes a deal with the robot devil, he tries to haunt Fry to death.

A fantastic episode of Futurama. The Robot Devil is a great character, and he is up to his usual devious ways. He even makes reference to the fact that he and Fry swapped hands at one stage, and keeps trying to sing to Bender. Genius!

Fry misses his friend – as he always does. His grief is similar to that he went through in the episode Godfellas, after Bender was catapulted out of the ship to drift through space forever. Fry can never grieve for Bender in a ‘normal’ way. This time he decamps to an Amish world to live without machines. Although this may have something to do with the fact that Bender drove Fry to a heart attack by possessing machines.

There is a real difference between old and new Futurama, but sometimes the line between the two is slightly blurred and every so often an episode comes along that feels like it belongs in the original four seasons of the show, and this is one of them. All the characters are on fine form, and the story is not too tied to life in 2011 – although there is a great quip about Obamacare!

A fun and funny episode of Futurama! More like this please!

I’d prefer to have my futurama with as little ‘quips’ dealing with politics as possible in the future.
