Guide Steampunk Alice Through Wonderland

Jonathan Green is a name that should fill people with confidence when it comes to three things:

  • Adventure Gamebooks;
  • Steampunk;
  • Successful Kickstarters

So you can all breath a sigh of relief as I tell (or remind) you that the author is currently running a Kickstarter campaign to publish an adventure gamebook in which YOU guide Alice through Wonderland, rather than simply reading a set story.

As with Green’s previous Kickstarter for You are the Hero – A history of Fighting Fantasy, the finished product will be published by Snowbooks. Based upon that previous work – expect the quality to be top notch. Alice’s Nightmare in Wonderland is a dark, steampunk adventure gamebook.

But what is this Adventure Gamebook milarky? I hear you ask. Well, here’s the blurb from the kickstarter to give you a taste:

ALICE’S NIGHTMARE IN WONDERLAND is set several years after the events of ‘Through the Looking Glass’. Alice finds herself back in Wonderland and called upon to save the realm from the increasingly deranged Queen of Hearts. But all is not as it first appears, and soon Alice is battling to save herself from the nightmare that is rapidly overtaking Wonderland.

If you’ve ever wondered what would have happened if Alice hadn’t drunk from the bottle labelled ‘Drink Me’, or if she hadn’t joined the Hatter, the March Hare, and the Dormouse for tea, now you can find out. In ALICE’S NIGHTMARE IN WONDERLAND, rather than becoming Alice yourself, YOU guide Alice through the fluctuating dream world, deciding which route she should take, which perils to risk, and which of Wonderland’s strange denizens to fight. But be warned – whether Alice succeeds in her quest, or meets a dire end as the nightmare escalates, will be down to the choices YOU make.

So to sum up: Readers read a paragraph … and then make a decision about where the story goes next. For the younger members, you may have played these on your tablets or phones as companies like Tin Man Games produce digital versions. As a child of the 1980s, I grew up with this genre and it’s great to see the continuation of a brilliant medium. Game plus book equals hours of entertainment that will mean the story is never the same twice.

Head on over to the campaign page for more details. I’m also heading over to give Mr. Green some more of my hard earned pennies!
