“Open Channel D!”… Mr Waverley will be proud!

Released this week are set shots of Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer on a Vespa from THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E., directed by Guy Ritchie and also starring Elizabeth Debicki, Jared Harris, Hugh Grant, and Alicia Vikander

This is the first look at both Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer as, respectively, Napoleon Solo and Ilya Kuryakin. The photos show the two riding on a Vespa – on first impressions these guys look the part. Cavill has thrown off all signs of his being Kal-El; he can pull off a convincing US accent, although shaking off echoes of Robert Vaughn’s unmistakable voice will be hard, and credit where it’s due – he managed to get what Christian Bale couldn’t: a superhero and a secret agent franchise (Bale wasn’t picked for Bond because of Batman, and we have to resume that the studio hopes UNCLE has legs on it!); Hammer has the harder part – David McCallum is Ilya Kuryakin. McCallum took on the role of a Russian agent at the height of the Cold War and made him accepted – and he was arguably the smarter half of the pair. Even today, the best line on NCIS ever is “What did Ducky look like when he was younger? ” Gibbs: “A lot like Ilya Kuryakin!”

I really hope they manage to sneak in a McCallum & Robert Vaughn cameos in there!
