Harry Potter Weekend: Day 2 – Apple Store Q&A w/ Deathly Hallows Cast

The 2nd event I attended was the cast & crew question/answer session at the Apple Store in NYC’s SoHo. I asked one of the employees how long the line to get in was and at noon, the line was around the block, with folks having started lining up overnight – we geeks are hardcore for the things we love, that’s for sure!

As we posted earlier, many of the cast members from the Harry Potter films (minus the trio) were in attendance: Michael Gambon, Robbie Coltrane, Warwick Davis, Helen McCrory, David Thewlis, Natalia Tena, Bonnie Wright, James Phelps, Oliver Phelps, Evanna Lynch, Freddie Stroma and producers David Heyman and David Barron. Lots of photos below and you can see the rest here: HP & Deathly Hallows @ Apple Store SoHo. Apple will be posting the video from the panel so we’ll have that for you as soon as we get the link!

Some highlights from the session were:

  • The change in technology over the years has allowed for Robbie Coltrane to have an easier time of becoming Hagrid – lots of mechanical parts in the shoes he had to wear to make him look like a half-giant! Additionally, the Seven Potters scene was difficult to shoot and even the cast didn’t know how they’d pull it off  but were impressed by how it turned out.
  • Remus Lupin was gay. Or at least that’s how David Thewlis played the character under director Alfonso Cuaron (Prisoner of Azkaban) without JK Rowling’s knowledge. When he found out that Lupin actually gets married in the books, he was pleased about working with Natalia Tena, but had to completely change his performance.
  • The cast described their favorite scenes and some of them were:
    • Michael Gambon loved the scenes at the Great Hall’s dais, giving his speeches
    • David Heyman enjoyed the scene of the boys making animal noises in the Gryffindor common room in Prisoner of Azkaban (they were short on budget so couldn’t turn them into the animals themselves) and of Harry and Hermione dancing in Deathly Hallows
    • David Barron liked a scene from Sorcerer’s Stone, where Uncle Vernon pointed out that his best day of the week was Sundays because there was no post that day
    • Robbie Coltrane loved the scene where Hagrid’s beard caught fire in the first film because of his little girl
    • Warwick Davis enjoyed the Goblet of Fire Yule Ball, and stage diving through the crowd, as well as the Tale of the Three Brothers animated sequence
    • Helen McCrory mentioned a scene from the last film where everyone was present in a fiery Hogwarts
    • David Thewlis loved the comedic moments of the series, especially working with Mark Williams and Julie Walters
    • Natalia Tena loved the Sorting Hat in the first film and Lupin’s Boggart in the wardrobe – though she couldn’t remember the word Boggart at all!
    • Bonnie Wright loved the laying in a puddle of water for Chamber of Secrets, as well as the Deathly Hallows epilogue
    • Oliver Phelps liked the fight between Fred and George in Goblet of Fire
    • James Phelps loved shooting the Weasley joke shop and seeing the huge models of themselves outside the store
    • Evanna Lynch liked attending a wizard wedding (Bill and Fleur’s)
    • Freddie Stroma enjoyed learning to thwart Quaffles for Quidditch training, and accidentally hitting a costume crew member in the back of the head.
  • The cast were asked what House they wanted to be Sorted into and Bonnie, Oliver & James had visited the museum at the WB lot where anyone can get sorted:
    • Bonnie was afraid to get sorted in front of a crowd in case it didn’t choose her for Gryffindor
    • Oliver said the Hat called out ‘Another Weasley, eh?’ which freaked him out a bit and sorted him in Gryffindor
    • James found himself in Ravenclaw which he didn’t seem to happy about
