Iain Banks Reveals He Has Terminal Cancer

IainBanksIn a shock announcement on his website this afternoon, 59-year-old Scottish novelist Iain Banks said he is in the late stages of gall bladder cancer.

Banks broke the saddening news to fans on iain-banks.net stating:

“I have cancer. It started in my gall bladder, has infected both lobes of my liver and probably also my pancreas and some lymph nodes….

The bottom line, now, I’m afraid, is that as a late stage gall bladder cancer patient, I’m expected to live for ‘several months’ and it’s extremely unlikely I’ll live beyond a year. So it looks like my latest novel, The Quarry, will be my last.”

The Quarry has already been submitted to the publishers and attempts are being made to bring its release forward so that Iain will be around to see it.

The author’s current plans, as of now, are to make good use of the time he has left with his friends and family. With humour, he wrote, “I’ve asked my partner Adele if she will do me the honour of becoming my widow…By the time this goes out we’ll be married and on a short honeymoon. We intend to spend however much quality time I have left seeing friends and relations and visiting places that have meant a lot to us.”

Iain Banks is an acclaimed author who has straddled both the science fiction and ‘standard’ fiction genres since the 1980s. He has published his strands of work under two variants of his name – ‘Iain M. Banks’ being used for his science fiction, and the simple ‘Iain Banks’ for his other work. His science fiction series, The Culture, is widely recognised by fans of the genre.

A website is to be set up for family, friends, and fans to give messages and keep up to date on his progress.
